Every time I hear “blue states are so rich and awesome” I say - of course, that’s where the offices and transportation hubs are. And the food and the resources and even the manufacturing comes from literally everywhere else.

These are brilliant essays on a part of Americana that I often ignore. Not by choice but habit. Keep it up, Waylon. You've really tapped into how regret, dread and loss are the real core of horror.

I'm far-left, and I hate the red-state bashing that goes down on the coasts. It's obnoxious. It tends to come from centrist corporate liberals, not leftists, if that helps, which it may not.

And publishing's attitude toward the region brings to mind JD Vance, a counterexample to "white men can't get published." It turns out that rich whites can easily get traditionally published, but only if they shit on their poor cousins. Which is, incidentally, the same deal publishing offers all the other races.

Appalachia is beautiful. It's much older than we are, and it will be here after we're gone.
